Coach Torey Ortmayer
Founder & Head Coach | Hydra Aquatics
Torey Ortmayer is the Founder and Head Coach of Hydra Aquatics. A native of Northern Virginia, his journey in competitive swimming began with 13 seasons in the NVSL, competing for Dominion Hills and Overlee. That early passion evolved into a career defined by leadership, innovation, and a commitment to athlete development.
As a student-athlete at Gonzaga College High School, Torey captained both the varsity swim and water polo teams, helping lead Gonzaga to WMPSSDL and METRO championships his senior year. His accomplishments earned him First Team Washington Post All-Met honors and NISCA All-American recognition. He continued his athletic career at Occidental College, where he played NCAA water polo and began coaching youth swimming and water polo.
Coaching Career
Since 2007, Torey has built a broad and successful coaching resume across high school, summer league, and USA Swimming clubs. His achievements include:
- 4x VHSL State Champion Coach
- 5x VHSL Region Champion Coach
- 10x VHSL District Champion Coach
- Back-to-back NVSL Division 1 Championships with Tuckahoe (2023β2024)
- Strength coach for Olympian Torri Huske leading up to the 2021 Tokyo Games
At Tuckahoe Recreation Club, Torey led the Tigers to their first NVSL Division 1 title since 1985, their first Division 1 Relay Carnival win since 2011, and their first-ever All-Star Relay Championship. In 2024, Tuckahoe completed its first-ever Triple Crown β winning the Division 1 dual meet title, Division 1 Relay Carnival, and All-Star Relays in a single season.

Torey holds a Bachelor of Arts from Occidental College and is known for his holistic coaching style that integrates sport science, mental preparation, and values-based mentorship. He leads hundreds of athletes annually and believes that the journey matters as much as the result.
